Rose Hill is located on land that was once part of an 18th century plantation of the same name. 903 acres of the land that is now Rose Hill were purchased by Daniel French Sr. in 1723. His farm passed down through the generations, and large terraces of roses were planted on the property. “Rose Hill Farm” was sold for development in the 1950s. The community as it is known today was begun in 1954. The farm’s silos are still standing as part of a private school on May Boulevard.

Public school students in Rose Hill are served by Rose Hill Elementary, Mark Twain Middle School and Thomas A. Edison High School. The John Marshall Library provides materials to residents of all ages. A number of outstanding post-secondary schools are nearby, including the renowned educational offerings of Washington, D.C. American University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Loyola College and the United States Naval Academy are just a few of the institutions within arm’s reach of Rose Hill.

Recreational opportunities in and around Rose Hill are many and varied. The Lee District RECenter encompasses more than 80,000 feet and offers swimming pools, fitness equipment, volleyball and basketball courts, a running track and more. The surrounding park covers 193 acres and provides a soccer field, football fields, walking trails and a carousel, among other facilities. Nearby Huntley Meadows Park is nestled in the Hybla Valley and encompasses towering forests, lush meadows and wetlands. The 18-hole Greendale Golf Course, located nearby, offers a putting green, a clubhouse and more.
